Despite recent heavy rains in parts of the state, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s seeing warning signs of a drought. Grassley has been home to his family farm in New Hartford over two recent weekends to help his son plant corn and soybeans.Grassley says he was amazed by the huge clouds of dust that followed the machinery in the fields, as the ground was so dry. He’s noticing another problem, with which he says farmers across Iowa are likely becoming familiar. He says the chemicals used for killing weeds need to be activated by rain, and there hasn’t been enough. He says this requires additional spraying by farmers. Some parts of Iowa were drenched with more than an inch and a quarter of rain yesterday morning, while other areas got none.
