A monument to fallen firefighters and police officers was dedicated this morning in Sioux City. The brick monument contains the names of 10 firefighters, four police officers and four Woodbury County Sheriff’s Deputies who died in the line of duty. Congressman Tom Latham attended the dedication. He says we need to thank those who serve us today along with continuing to recognize those who have given their lives in the line of duty.Latham, who’s a republican from Alexander, says the influx of drugs into Iowa has made the job tougher.The widow of one of the fallen firefighters, Sandy Johnson-Tonjes, also attended the ceremony. Her husband, Michael Johnson, died in 1982.Johnson-Tonjes says she’s glad the memorial honors the memory of her husband and others. She says it gives her two sons a chance to share how proud they are of their dad and what he did.Today is “National Peace Officers Memorial Day”.
