Luther students sink stress with soccer streak

May 19, 2000 By admin

Today’s the last day of final exams at Luther College in Decorah. That means it’s also the last day for this year’s round of nude co-ed soccer games. School administrators tried to halt the tradition in 1997 by having seven students arrested for indecent exposure, but those methods didn’t work.Luther College spokesman Jerry Johnson says emphasis seemed to make more students get involved. He says the school is recognizing that sometimes kids will just be kids, so the nude soccer matches will be allowed on the library lawn.Johnson says a Cedar Rapids T-V station requested permission to come on campus to film the game, but that request was denied. He says they don’t want the game becoming a public spectacle. He says the nude soccer games began about 14 years ago and have become a senior tradition.
