Five community projects are getting cash awards from the Iowa Farm Bureau as “Community Health Prize” winners. Marion High School’s “empty bowls” project is getting five-thousand dollars. Marion volunteer coordinator Joan Hackbarth says the kids decided to mold ceramic bowls, sell ’em and donate the profits to the Marion Food Bank. Hackbarth says in the first year, the Marion kids made and sold about 70 ceramic bowls. Today, hundreds are made. Other “Community Health Prize” winners are Southern Appanoose County’s First Responders, the Dallas Community Clothes Pantry, Muscatine’s “Safe Streets” project and the “Healthy Siouxland Initiative” in Sioux City.
