Senator Harkin says many Americans are not allowed to vote

May 25, 2000 By admin

The most fundamental right in America, the right to vote, is being denied to millions of citizens, according to Senator Tom Harkin. He says elderly and handicapped people are not getting the access they deserve to polling places and large-print or braille ballots aren’t available. He says studies in Arkansas and New Hampshire found 40 to 60-percent of polling places were not accessible to the handicapped. Harkin and Arizona Senator John McCain are joining to call for a -national- study of the situation by the General Accounting Office.Harkin says there has been no follow-up to see how well the Voting Accessibilities Act of 1984 has been working since it passed. He was also the primary author of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
