Harkin calls for regulations on using genetic information

June 3, 2000 By admin

Senator Tom Harkin says it’s time to develop guidelines for the use of new genetic medical technology. The race to map the human genetic code concluded last week. Harkin says without clear, legal guidelines, Americans could be discriminated against in insurance policies and employment because their genetic code might show problems.Harkin says your genetic code should be private, unless you give your doctor permission to release it to others. Harkin says this new territory shouldn’t spark a lot of fear, however, because it’ll bring new hope for those who might be afflicted with certain illnesses. Also last week, the team of Scottish researchers which cloned Dolly the sheep announced more advancements.
