Group says former A-G is too political to be a judge

June 5, 2000 By admin

An anti-abortion group is speaking out against the nomination of former Iowa Attorney General Bonnie Campbell to the Eighth U-S Circuit Court of Appeals. Iowa Right to Life Executive Director, Kim Gordon says Campbell’s past record shows she’s too political to be a judge. Gordon cites a stand on abortion Campbell took as attorney general as one example. She says Campbell spoke out against overturning the law that grants a woman the right to have an abortion. Gordon says abortion is not the only thing that should keep Campbell from being a judge. Gordon says Campbell has spoken out against a large group of people in statements Gordon says are “anti-Christian.” She says Campbell also served as the Chair of the Iowa Democratic Party. Gordon says Iowa Right to Life believes Campbell’s past stands on the issues would influence her rulings.Iowa Senators Tom Harkin, a democrat, and Chuck Grassley, a republican, both have offered support of Campbell’s nomination in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Gordon claims Grassley’s support of Campbell is not as strong as it may appear, as the two have an agreement not to block each other’s appointees.Gordon says Campbell’s nomination will likely be taken up by the Senate Judiciary Committee this Thursday.
