Group tries to change attititudes about genetically modified food

June 5, 2000 By admin

Farm groups have united behind an organization called “Foundation EARTH” in hopes of changing consumers’ minds about genetic modification of food.South Dakota farmer Mark Berg, a former American Soybean Association president, is in Iowa today as part of the public relations effort. Berg says it’ll take allot of money to convince consumers, particularly the Europeans, that hormones in meat and genetic alteration of plants are o-k.Berg says farmers must learn from past mistakes, such as opposition a few years ago to growth hormones in cow’s milk. After touring Iowa and other farm-belt states, Berg will visit major markets like Los Angeles and New York to sing the praises of “bio-technology.”The Earth in Foundation EARTH stands for “Environment, Agriculture, Research and Technology in Harmony.”
