Scholarships honoring those who died and those who survived the crash of Flight 232 in Sioux City were given out for the first time this year. The jet crashed at the Sioux City airport eleven years ago, killing 112 of the 296 passengers and crew on board. Debbie Hubbard, the Executive Director of the Siouxland Foundation, says the crew of the plane decided last year during the 10th anniversary of the crash to establish the scholarship fund. Hubbard says the scholarship fund grew as people heard about it and donated.She says Captain Al Haynes, the man who piloted the stricken jet, donates money from speeches he gives about the incident to the scholarship fund. Hubbard says the scholarships go to students planning to study medicine or a health related field at one of four Sioux City area colleges.Hubbard says they gave out two 500-dollar scholarships in this first year, and says they hope to increase the number of scholarships awarded next year.
