Government officials from Puerto Rico will tour wind farms in northern Iowa today and tomorrow. The 320 wind turbines in the Storm Lake and Clear Lake areas produce enough electricity to meet the needs of 70-thousand homes. The tour is being organized by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.Sharon Tahtinen, the D-N-R’s Energy Bureau chief, says the Puerto Ricans are interested in learning about Iowa’s wind energy complexes because they are considering building their own.Tahtinen says Iowa is the nation’s third largest producer of wind energy. She says it’s a renewable resource.Besides touring the Clear Lake and Storm Lake areas, the delegation will visit the Iowa Energy Center in Ames and the small-scale wind turbines at the Nevada High school and hospital.
