Polling places open, turnout in question

The polls open this morning across Iowa for a primary election that features no statewide race, but several local contests. In the third congressional district, Phil Ferren of Ottumwa faces Jay Marcus of Fairfield in a Republican primary. Iowa Republican party chairman Kayne Robinson says it’s an energetic contest.In the first congressional district, Gregory Guy of Davenport faces Bob Simpson of Iowa City in a democrat primary. Iowa Democrat Party executive director Jeanie Murray says democrat turnout in the first district could be similar to 1994. She says there were two contested races at that time and 17,000 voters turned out.A primary race in southwest Iowa is drawing statewide attention — a woman is running for Sheriff in Union County. Jo Anne Duckworth is running against Richard Harmon in today’s democrat primary. Duckworth has been a dispatcher at the Union County Law Center for 22 years.Duckworth lives in Creston.
