Northeast Iowa police officers to win award

Two northeast Iowa police officers will receive the Governor’s Award for Valor after they rescued a woman from the flooding Turkey River in Elkader in May of 1999. Elkader Police Chief Paul Bazyn took a rope and jumped in and swam out to the woman. Bazyn says he was joined by Officer Brian Berger in the swift-moving current.Bazyn says the woman was not seriously hurt, only soggy, after the life-threatening ordeal.Bazyn says what he and the other officer did was all part of the job.The two will be honored at a ceremony tomorrow at 1:30 p-m at the Iowa capitol.
