Decorah high school baseball coach Dennis Olejniczak is nearing a milestone only two other coaches from Iowa have achieved. Olejniczak is only five wins short of one thousand for his career that has included 37-seasons at Decorah and one at Janesville. After all these years, Olejnizcak says his enthusiasm remains high. He says that’s the secret to being successful, enjoying the kids and the game of baseball.Olejniczak says the wins are nice but coaching goes beyond that to feeling that you’re helping to develop good people.Olejniczak says all he ever wanted to be was a coach and he knew it at an early age. Most coaches who have been in the profession 38-years would say they never expected to be in that long. Olejniczak says he’s not suprised, he’s always wanted to stay in coaching a long time. He says that desire has never waned. He bids for win 996 tonight against Waverly-Shell Rock. Current Lansing Kee coach Gene Schultz has surpassed one thousand victories as did former St. John Bancroft coach Vince Meier.
