Coralville is getting more water than it can handle from recent rains, causing special sewer-system holding ponds to overflow into a tributary of the Iowa River. Mick Klemesrud of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the ponds hold sewer-system waste water that’s been through the treatment process, but not all bacteria has been removed as chlorine hadn’t been added yet. Iowa City and the University of Iowa officials have been notified and will tweak their drinking water treatment systems. Coralville is expanding its sewer-system treatment system to handle more water, but the expansion won’t be complete ’til December, 2001.
