Cong. Leach Pushes Privacy Bill

June 15, 2000 By admin

Congressman Jim Leach is pushing legislation which would keep medical records private. Bankers and life insurance managers are starting to examine a potential client’s medical records, and Leach says it’s time to close that down. Leach, who’s a republican from Davenport, says keeping medical records private preserves the doctor/patient relationship.Leach says it’s time for “common sense” restraints on the release of a patient’s medical condition or history. Leach expects the bill to clear the House Banking Committee, he’s chairman of that committee, and Leach says the “Medical/Financial Privacy Protection Act” has broad support in the U-S House, but may run into opposition in the U-S Senate.
