Some state Senators are outraged by the state board of regents’ decision to extend health insurance benefits to partners of homosexual University of Iowa employees. Senator Steve King, a republican from Kyron, says he’s surprised Iowa President Mary Sue Coleman, who’s been complaining about a lack of state budget support for her university, would choose to spend extra money in this fashion. King, however, doesn’t question whether the Regents have the authority to do what they did. King says the decision is “not consistent with Iowa values” and King believes many legislators will seek to undo the Regents’ decision. King and other Senators plan to take Governor Vilsack to court over his executive order which bars discrimination against gay state workers.
