As part of the African-American “Juneteenth” celebration, some U-S Senators suggested yesterday the federal government should make amends for slavery in our nation’s early history. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley disagrees, saying Americans in the 21st century should not be saddled with a “monetary obligation for something that happened as far back as 400 years ago.”Some black activists demand a cash payment from Uncle Sam to make up for how their ancestors were treated. Grassley says the deaths of 600-thousand Americans during the Civil War over slavery already speaks volumes. Grassley says he wouldn’t object to some sort of governmental apology, as long as there’s no required payment.Yesterday’s “Juneteenth” event marked the anniversary of the last slaves being told about their freedom on June 19, 1865.
