Iowa’s Senior Senator took Attorney General Janet Reno to task this afternoon for failing to appoint a special counsel to investigate Vice President Al Gore’s 1996 fundraising activities. Grassley says of all the cases they’ve looked at, this is the case where criticism is warranted.Senator Charles Grassley is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee which is grilling Reno on the matter. Grassley said Reno’s decision not to launch an independent investigation of Gore was made on the advice of a bad source. He says the decision was based mainly on the arguments of Lee Raddick, Chief of the Public Integrity Section. Grassley says Raddick is known as “DR No”, because he declines to investigate so many cases.A top Justice Department official has recommended to Reno that a special counsel investigate whether Gore lied under oath in an April interview. Gore has released the interview transcript, most of which covers Gore’s visit to a Buddist temple in 1996. Gore maintains he didn’t know it was a fundraiser. A 65-thousand dollar, illegal donation was made to the Democratic Party after Gore’s visit.
