July 4, 2000 By admin

A group in Manchester is trying to restore one of Iowa’s historic one-room schoolhouses. The McGee School was built in 1868 and is believed to be one of only three remaining brick schoolhouses in Iowa. Preservation Committee member Sharon Cook, says the effort began with former schoolteacher Sarah Huftalen. Huftalin lived in the area when the brick schoolhouse was in use.Cook says they’re trying to raise 25-hundred dollars in matching funds for a 10-thousand dollar grant. The schoolhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.
