The switch to a new area code in central Iowa yesterday is causing some temporary problems with 9-1-1 service. Hampton Police Chief Bud Nelson says some parts of Franklin County were not able to use the emergency line and the telephone trouble may still be there this morning.Call tests of 9-1-1 in towns like Coulter, Alexander and Latimer did not go through, but sometimes did connect when tried a second time. Chief Nelson urges people not to call 9-1-1 to see if it works. In an emergency, they should call the Sheriff’s Department direct. Nelson says the glitches in the system should be fixed soon and no lives were threatened due to the trouble.Part of the 5-1-5 area code has been carved off to create the new 6-4-1 zone. The 5-1-5 area code will still work in the new area through early December.
