Iowa Games kick off tonight

Thousands of amateur athletes are converging on Ames this weekend for the annual Iowa Games sports festival. Iowa Games Executive Director Jim Hallihan says deadlines for entering most sports have passed, but there are still some sports you can register for on site.Hallihan says if you don’t want to participate in a sport, they still need volunteers to help run the events. Some 15-thousand athletes are expected to participate. Hallihan says things have gotten so big they’ve had to move some of the events from this weekend.The opening ceremonies are tonight at Jack Trice Stadium. Hallihan says it looks like they’ll get good weather for the event.This is the 14th annual year for the Olympic-style sports festival. Hallihan announced Thursday the Iowa Games has extended its agreement to hold the games in Ames through 2005. The Iowa Games have been held in Ames every year since they began.
