The two candidates in Iowa’s first district congressional race have pledged to not use any radio or television advertising. Democrat challenger Bob Simpson proposed the idea and says incumbent Republican Jim Leach agreed. Simpson says individual candidates have to take some action if there is ever going to be campaign finance reform.Challengers are generally at a disadvantage in name recognition, but Simpson doesn’t think the pledge will hurt his bid to unseat the 12-term incumbent. Simpson says candidates have to define themselves anew with each campaign, so no incumbent has an advantage.Simpson, who is in a wheelchair, plans to become known by visiting potential voters in person. The two candidates will still use newspaper advertising and mailings to get their message out. They’re also scheduled to meet in debates before the election.
