Many thousands of married couples in Iowa may soon be one step closer to a significant tax break. Senate republican leaders have promised to vote today on ending the so-called marriage penalty. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says it’s an unfair tax that averages 14-hundred dollars a year per couple. The tax is being paid by 297-thousand Iowa married couples and by about 42-percent of couples nationwide. Grassley says U-S families are being forced to shell out far too much money in taxes.Grassley says the Senate is “in a tax-cutting mood.” Last week, the Senate voted to eliminate the estate tax or “death tax” in Grassley’s words.Grassley says the estate tax is essentially a “ransom” the government collects to let people keep a family business in the family.
