July 25, 2000 By admin

The Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University is the first in the country to aquire a new type of electron microscope. Chemist Vince Crist says the new microscope replaces an older one.The new Auger (oh-zhay) microscope gives scientists a close look at small pieces of material. Crist says it will let them find and fix flaws that lead to equipment failure. Crist says the microscope will be especially useful in microchip development. The Ames Laboratory is run by I-S-U for the U-S Department of Energy, which Crist says footed the bill for the 850-thousand dollar microscope.
