We’re in the midst of the worst two months of the year for home burglaries in Iowa. It’s also the most popular time of the year for vacations. The Insurance Information Institute says that’s no coincidence. One spokeswoman recommends you use common sense before hitting the road by locking all of your doors and windows.Elizabeth Mosely says to tell a building staff member or a trusted neighbor that you’re leaving and have them be watchful for anything suspicious. They also might pick up your mail and newspapers — or just have them cancelled. Mosely says to use timers on your lights, but don’t set them all to switch on and off at the same hour.Mosely says to leave a car in the driveway, if possible, to give the appearance someone is home. Also, arrange to have your lawn cut. She says there are other precautions to take inside, such as turning off all unnecessary appliances. She suggests lowering the sound on your phone and answering machine as a burglar who hears them going off may deduce your absence.
