Baseball tourney opens with blow outs and shut outs

The state high school baseball tournament opened Wednesday in Carroll and Marshalltown. In Carroll, it was the class 1-A quarterfinals.Kee High downed Iowa City Regina 4-2, Newell-Fonda shut out Elk-Horn Kimballton 4-0, Granville Spalding hammered Treynor 18-0 and Lynnville Sully shut out Rockford 9-0. In the class 2-A quarterfinals in Marshalltown. Dyersville Beckman’s Luke Helle allowed only one and struck out 18 as the fifth ranked Blazers got by Sheldon 3-0.Osage scored two runs in the first and added another in the second in a 6-2 win over Denver. Jason Norman won a pitchers dual with Shenandoah’s Ryan Grebert as West Branch edged the Mustangs 2-0. Justin Petty led off the game with a homer to left and earned the victory on the mound by giving up six hits as third ranked Carlisle downed Colfax-Mingo 10-1.
