The class 4-A State Baseball Tournament quarterfinals in Marshalltown opened with a stunning upset. Drew Schrader tossed a six-hit shutout as Burlington upset defending champion West Des Moines Dowling 4-0 in the 4-A opener. Schrader says the plan going in was to take away Dowling’s power game.Dowling coach Ed Mauro says it was just one of those days.Burlington will take an 18-20 record into Friday’s 4A semifinals. Dowling ends its season at 32-8. The Class 3-A quarterfinal opener in Carroll featured an extra inning game. Eight seed South Tama led top Fort Madison before the Bloodhounds came back to tied it up and send the game to extra innings. Fort Madison got a run-scoring bloop single in the bottom of the 10th with two outs to win 6-5.
