Expect long lines for "Tax Freedom Weekend"

July 31, 2000 By admin

In a few days, many Iowans will be standing in long lines. “Tax Freedom Weekend” is Friday and Saturday and means Iowa stores won’t be charging state sales tax on inexpensive clothing and shoes. Renee Mulvey of the Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance estimates shoppers in Iowa stores will save about three million dollars this weekend.Mulvey says the agency made a very detailed list of what is and is not subject to the sales tax this weekend. The items have to cost under 100 dollars.Athletic wear is not exempt from the sales tax. Mulvey says her agency has decided sports bras can be sold, tax-free, while athletic supporters must be taxed.Mulvey may not be among the hordes of shoppers, as she’s heard horror stories of the crushes in Texas stores when that state had a sales tax holiday.
