North Polk pitcher is perfect

The class 1-A championship matchup is set at the state high school softball tournament in Fort Dodge. North Polk’s Renee Thompson joined a list of state tournament legends and in the process led the Comet’s to the 1a title game. Thompson tossed the 8th perfect game in state tournament history as 5th ranked North Polk downed 18th ranked Eldora-New Providence 2-0 in Wednesday night’s semifinal round.Thompson says it is the first perfect game of her career though she has come close this season.Eldora-New Providence coach Andi Royster says her team had been hitting well until Wednesday night.Sisters Amber and Nicole Wood opened the game with singles and later scored as second ranked Alburnett cruised to a 4-0 victory over tenth ranked Don Bosco to win a berth in the championship game. Alburnett coach Kevin Johnson says getting two runs in the first gave them a lift.Don Bosco coach Jane Becker said the two run first for Alburnett changed the complexion of the game.In class 1-A consolation round action Pocahontas cruised past Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto 11-0 in five innings. Pleasantville downed Interstate-35 4-1. Pleasantville coach Tom Roff says his team bounced back after a disappointing opening round loss.
