Congressman Jim Leach may have an inside track in a Bush administration. Leach and George W. Bush’s running mate, Dick Cheney, worked together in an office in Washington from 1969 to ’71.Leach and Cheney worked in the Nixon Administration’s “Office of Economic Opportunity.” Leach says Cheney wasn’t an enthusiast for all the programs, but they were mandated by law. Leach says Cheney made the programs work because he was well-organized.Leach says Cheney has a “broad-mind.”Leach, who’s a republican from Davenport, is currently chair of the House Banking Committee and is expected to become chair of the House International Relations Committee if he wins re-election. Leach has long been interested in a job in the State Department.
