August 5, 2000 By admin

In this weekend between the two national political conventions, Iowans will be celebrating the birth of the only U-S President from Iowa. One of the big events at Hooverfest in West Branch is centered around a very physical game called Hooverball. It’s a combination of volleyball and tennis.Pat Hand is manager of academic programs for the Hoover Library Association. She says there are 16 teams coming from all over Iowa to play in this weekend’s annual Hooverball Tournament. The game was created for Hoover and his staff by the President’s physician. Played on the White House lawn, it often included members of the Supreme Court.Hand says the weekend Hooverfest also includes a variety of educational and entertaining events. There’s the Presidential 5-K Run, dramatic and musical productions, a concert and fireworks tonight, and plenty of family activities.Herbert Hoover was born August 10, 1874 in the tiny eastern Iowa town, just east of Iowa City on Interstate 80.
