Authorities say the five-year-old Des Moines girl who was hit by a drunk driver while riding her tricycle last night died early this morning of internal and head injuries. Des Moines Police Sergeant Bruce Elrod says two female teenagers were in the car, an 18-year-old at the wheel.The victim is Cassidy Mahedy. The driver is 18-year-old Melissa Newman of West Des Moines. Elrod says Newman is charged with vehicular manslaughter and will be arraigned today.19-year-old Erin Carper of West Des Moines was the passenger in the car. Elrod says she faces several charges, too, including public intoxication and disorderly conduct. Sergeant Elrod says the two underage women had apparently been drinking alcohol in a nearby tavern, which is now the subject of an investigation by the Vice Squad.The name of the tavern has not been released. A third person has also been arrested — a man who Elrod says was also drunk and had been following the two young women from the tavern in another car.
