Republicans in Congress are trying to mount an effort to override President Clinton’s weekend veto of the so-called marriage tax penalty. Iowa Congressman Tom Latham says he would support the override, but says democrats — even those who supported the measure — likely won’t go along. He says they’ll be enough loyalists to Clinton to vote not to protect him.The President says the tax bill mainly helps rich couples. Latham disagrees, citing his recently married son who now will pay 14-hundred more dollars in taxes. Congress would need a two-thirds majority to override the President’s veto.
