Heidi Watkins denies killing daughter

August 16, 2000 By admin

Accused killer Heidi Watkins is expected back on the witness stand this morning to testify in her own defense. The 30-year-old Spirit Lake woman tearfully answered questions yesterday about the January day when she found her two-year-old daughter dead. Watkins said she called her mother, then called 9-1-1. She says she tried to perform C-P-R but couldn’t open Shelby Duis’ mouth. Then the ambulance arrived and the EMT said there was nothing he could do.Watkins was asked by co-defense attorney Pamela Winger if she’d ever abused her daughter. She said she’d never abused her 2-year-old daughter, did not kill her and never suspected her boyfriend. Jesse Wendelsdorf testified earlier that he didn’t kill the girl. He was cleared of all charges at trial last month. Watkins also testified yesterday she’d been sexually abused as a girl by a relative and was raped as a teenager.Watkins said she’s now being treated by a counselor who specializes in victims of abuse and a psychologist is treating her for depression.
