Sioux City worried about control of Missouri River

Sioux City officials are concerned about potential changes in the way the Missouri River is managed. Mayor Marty Dougherty says an updated management plan is under consideration in Congress.He says the plan will likely be passed with bipartisan support in Congress, but faces a veto from the President. Dougherty says the plan developed by the Fish and Wildlife Service would not regulate the amount of water downstream of dams in South Dakota.He says that plan could hurt river navigation and recreation in dry years. Dougherty says the Fish and Wildlife plan could also be a problem in wet years and create flooding.Dougherty says the Fish and Wildlife plan doesn’t look at the impact along the whole river and is designed mainly to preserve the recreation areas in South Dakota.Dougherty says the impact on river navigation could be felt by farmers across the country.
