Some outraged by Duis verdict

August 25, 2000 By admin

Thursday’s verdict acquitting Heidi Watkins in the death of her two-year old daughter is not sitting well with some Spirit Lake residents. Watkin’s boyfriend, Jesse Wendelsdorf, was acquitted in Shelby Duis’ death last month — leaving no one accountable for the girl’s murder. Watkins was found guilty of neglecting Duis, and faces sentencing November 21st. Karen Roseberry operated the former daycare center Duis attended. Roseberry says she saw many of the injuries the child suffered before her death. Roseberry says Duis died a “horrible, painful death” and she wanted someone tostand accountable.Roseberry hopes some good comes out of the girl’s death. She says her death may “stimulate people to get off their duff and campaign to do something so stuff like this won’t happen.”
