Survey calls for a good crop of jobs this fall

A new survey gives a “sunny” forecast for Iowa job seekers. The Manpower survey shows just under one-third of Iowa businesses want to hire new workers in October, November and December.Manpower spokesman Michael Lynch says only 10 percent of businesses expect to drop employees in the final quarter of this year. Some job markets in Iowa are hotter than others. Nearly half of all businesses in Sioux City, Cedar Rapids and Dubuque want to hire workers, according to the survey, while just 17 percent of businesses in the Marshalltown and Mason City areas plan to expand their payroll. Lynch says businesses are still finding it difficult to hire new workers in almost every industry.Each quarter, Manpower conducts a survey of businesses across the nation.Here’s a look at the state for individual cities: Burlington, 20 percent of businesses want to hire; Cedar Rapids, 47 percent of businesses want to hire; Des Moines, 30 percent of businesses want to hire; Dubuque, 47 percent of businesses want to hire; Iowa City, 27 percent of businesses want to hire; Iowa Quad Cities, 20 percent of businesses want to hire; Marshalltown, 17 percent of businesses want to hire; Mason City, 17 percent of businesses want to hire; Muscatine, 23 percent of businesses want to hire; Ottumwa, 30 percent of businesses want to hire; Sioux City, 47 percent of businesses want to hire; Waterloo, 23 percent of businesses want to hire.
