Villisca murder to hit the big screen

August 30, 2000 By Matt Kelley

Iowa’s largest unsolved mass murder in 1912 will be the subject of a modern-day film. The movie “Haunting Villisca” will be shot in and around the southwest Iowa town and the house where eight people were hacked to death with an axe. Film Director James Serpento says paranormal investigators recently visited the house, uncovering and recording what they claim is evidence of restless spirits.Serpento is co-owner of Ariesworks Entertainment, based in Des Moines. He says the film is homegrown in the Hawkeye State. He says they’ll include as much of Iowa in the film as they possibly can.The company is still developing a timetable for “Haunting Villisca,” along with the cast, crew and budget.
