Former Santa finally goes on trial for abuse

September 5, 2000 By admin

The sexual abuse trial of a Cedar Falls man known for playing Santa Claus is set to finally get underway today. 86-year old Paul Everle Smith is accused of molesting a young girl and faces charges of second-degree sexual assault. Smith’s trial has been delayed three times due to health reasons. The trial was supposed to begin last week, but Smith suffered a stroke and the trial was moved back again. The judge says the trial will go on today without any more delays.
