A back-up defensive lineman for Iowa State seized an opportunity in last Saturday’s game, and ended up as the defensive player-of-the-game. Redshirt freshman Jordan Carstens of Bagley, Iowa, is getting kudos and a promise of more playing time from his coach, Dan McCarney.Carstens was a walk-on to the squad last year, and ended up being the 1999 Defensive Scout Team’s Player of the Year. Coach McCarney says Carstens has grown allot from his high school days in Panorama.McCarney says Carstens came to Iowa State weighing 228 pounds, which was too small for a Big 12 defensive lineman. The six-foot-five-inch Carstens has bulked up, and tips the scale at 280 today.Carstens, who is majoring in agri-business, was on the I-S-U Dean’s List last year and made the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll the fall semester.
