Tuition for undergraduate students at Iowa, Iowa State and U-N-I could go up more than seven percent next fall. The nine-member Board of Regents votes each fall to establish the tuition rate for the coming academic year, and the board’s executive staff is suggesting undergrad tuition go up seven-point-two percent. Board of Regents executive secretary Frank Stork says just over five-percent of that increase is tied to the “higher education price index” — that’s the inflation factor on college campuses.Stork says two percent of the increase will help improve the quality of the institutions. Not since 1992 has tuition at the state-supported schools risen seven percent. In the 1980s, tuition increases often reached double-digits. The board of regents will hear from students at its meeting this month, then make a final decision on 2001 tuition in October.
