World food prize awarded in Des Moines

The winners of the “World Food Prize” were announced today in Des Moines. Kenneth Quinn is the President of the Prize, he says the winners, Dr. Evagelina Villegas of Mexico and Dr. Surindar Vasal of India, developed a high protein corn know as “QPM.”The two worked on developing the particular type of corn over several decades and through skepticism in the scientific world. The corn is fed to kids in developing countries and has improved their health.The two winners will come to Des Moines October 12th to accept the prize. The World Food Prize is considered the Nobel Prize of food production. Villegas is the first woman to win the award in its 14-year history.
