Indiana coach Bobby Knight was fired yesterday, and University of Iowa athletic director Bob Bowlsby is all but guaranteeing Iowa coach Steve Alford will not take that Indiana job. Iowa athletic director Bob Bowlsby told E-S-P-N yesterday he is 100 percent confident Alford will not leave Iowa for Indiana. In a prepared statement, Alford, the former Indiana star, said he was saddened to see one of the greatest eras of college basketball end this way. Alford, who was a third-grader when he first met Knight, said he’s always seen Indiana and Knight as one in the same. Knight won three national titles in the three decades he coached the Hoosiers. Johnny Orr, the former Iowa State coach who is a former Big Ten colleague of Knight’s, told a Des Moines T-V station he’s disappointed his friend didn’t get to leave Indiana basketball on his own terms.
