Davenport mayor applies for police chief job

September 12, 2000 By admin

Davenport Mayor Phil Yerrington has applied for the city’s police chief job. Yerrington says part of the reason he’d applied for the chief’s job was because his father had also applied for it several years ago. He says he promised his father he’d try for the job too. Yerrington also says he applied because he wanted to scope out his prospects. He says there is life after politics and he wanted to see how he stacked up against those candidates.Yerrington says he made the list of 12 finalists but reportedly was not on the list of the final eight. Yerrington had 20 years as a police officer and was a lieutenant when he was elected mayor. He says he likes being the Mayor despite the low pay, and says he wanted to test the waters to see how he might fare if he decided to go back to law enforcement.Yerrington was instrumental in getting the former Davenport police chief fired. Steve Lynn is now a sergeant.
