Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is fuming over a Federal Trade Commission report that says the entertainment industry needs to regulate itself. That’s already been going on, and he says it’s clearly not working. The F-T-C says censorship or new legislation is not the answer to the problems in the industry. Grassley disagrees and says Hollywood needs to be reigned in.Grassley says the “filth, sex and violence” of Hollywood’s movies and music are polluting the minds of Americans, especially young Americans. He says he’s frustrated by President Clinton and Vice President Gore for how they’ve handled the entertainment industry. He says they “worship Hollywood and take their money,” which Grassley says has given Hollywood the impression that everything they’re doing is all right. Grassley alleges the Clinton/Gore administration is only saying publicly the violence and sex of Hollywood is bad, while they actually condone it.The F-T-C report says movies, music and video games are still marketed toward children, though labels say the products are for adults only. It adds, despite the report, the government should not try to regulate the industry, but allow the industry to police itself.
