Webster City discusses filters on library computers

September 13, 2000 By admin

Webster City residents met last night to discuss putting filters on computers at the town library to prevent access to adult websites.John Bohan, board president of the Kendall-Young Library, says about 65 people attended the town meeting and 15 of them gave presentations about why Internet filters should or should not be used.Bohan says the screening of computers has been discussed for several years but he stresses, there has not been a problem with misuse of the library’s facilities. He says last night’s meeting garnered much-needed conversations.A state survey of Iowa’s 540 public libraries finds most of them are linked to the Internet and few of them have security measures in place to block porn. The survey found 90-percent of the state’s libraries have public access to the World Wide Web and 95-percent of those have no “filters” to prevent kids and anyone else from entering adult sites.
