Famous Iowans on new lottery tickets

September 15, 2000 By admin

The State Historical Society of Iowa is entering into an unusual partnership with the Iowa Lottery for a new one-dollar scratch-off game. Tickets are now on sale for the “Famous Iowans” game. There are six tickets in the series, each depicting, as the name implies, a well-known Iowan.Roger Munns, spokesman for the Historical Society, says non-winning tickets will be good for one-dollar off the admission price to the Society’s annual Famous Iowans Costume Party and Dance in Des Moines on October 28th. At the party, people dress as their favorite Iowan, Iowa landmark or Iowa product. Munns says the new lottery game features people like wrestler Dan Gable and opera singer Simon Estes. There’s also Buffalo Bill Cody of LeClaire and actress Donna Reed of Denison. Munns says another celebrity is runner Natasha Kaiser-Brown of Des Moines who won a silver medal in the 1992 Olympics. The 6th Famous Iowan was never even a person — it’s the Cardiff Giant. One of the great hoaxes of the 1800s, the giant was cut from a slab of Fort Dodge gypsum and people were led to believe it was a petrified prehistoric man.
