No matter how much memory our computers have, many of us always seem to need more. A gift of more than a half-million dollars to Iowa State University could help pave that path to megabyte bliss.David Jiles is an I-S-U professor of material science and computer and electrical engineering. The Roy J-Carver Charitable Trust is donating 530-thousand dollars to set up a new lab at I-S-U to focus on research of magnetic “thin film” and magneto-electronic devices.Professor Jiles says one of the goals is to increase the on-line memory, also known as random access memory.Jiles says the new lab should be running by the spring semester. The Muscatine-based Carver Charitable Trust is the largest private foundation in Iowa. It awards more than 14-million dollars a year to support scientific research, scholarships, general education and other youth-related issues.
