ISU searches for culprit in statue beheading

September 19, 2000 By admin

Iowa State University’s Department of Public Safety is trying to find the person responsible for a beheading on campus. The victim was a statue by famed sculptor Christian Petersen. One of the heads on the “Ring of Life” sculpture was stolen from the lobby of MacKay Hall last week. Department of Public Safety Captain Gene Deisinger says the head was recovered this morning.A custodian found the head in a trash can in a nearby building. Deisinger says the severed head was broken into several pieces and they don’t know yet how much the vandalism will cost.Ironically, ISU is holding a special reception tonight to honor Petersen and an exhibit of his sculptures. Members of Petersen’s family are returning to the Ames campus for the event. Petersen came to ISU in 1934 and spent 21 years on campus completing a variety of works.
