At the urging of an Iowa Senator, President Clinton is calling for another one billion dollars to be spent to improve America’s elder care. Senator Chuck Grassley says the additional money is a good start, but he still has fears problems in Iowa nursing homes won’t be solved by the Clinton plan.Grassley says there’s some question if there are enough people available to become nurses aides in Iowa.Grassley says salaries must be raised for nurses aides, but could not specify how high they should be. Some Iowa nursing homes have seen a one hundred percent turnover in nurse’s aides during the past year. Grassley says people in that position provide a vital service.Clinton says he’ll send legislation to Congress within days to provide the one-billion dollars to states over five years to increase the number of nursing home employees. Grassley pushed for the money as chair of the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
